Chapter Six
“Where would you like to go now, Mercury? The Centered Abbey on Gornil?” She twisted her lips as she ran the possible paths through her mind.
“Yaccaro. I would like to go to Yaccaro until I have another assignment.”
She jerked her head up. “Really? There isn’t much there aside from the local populace.”
“I know, but there is a specialist that I wish to see and that is where she resides.”
Mia’s heart sank when he said that he wanted to seek another female. “I see. Yaccaro it is.”
She set the Green Fairy on course and accepted the immediate jump out of the Actuani fields. The ship slipped from one point in space to another, and it would be fourteen hours until the next jump.
“Nitza, I have dropped Hathna at Actuani and her rescue party at Janial for processing. I am currently on course to Yaccaro at the request of Mercury.”
“Status recorded. Have a good trip, Garden.”
Mia smiled. Nitza always used their call signs when there was someone else on board the ship. It was her own personal protocol.
“Thank you, Dispatch. Have a good day.”
She disconnected the call and released herself from the command chair. She stood and groaned as she stretched, forgetting that she had an audience until she heard a low rumble. Mercury was purring.
She looked at him and finally said, “Time for dinner. Our day has been rather peculiar and peculiar makes me hungry.”
He got to his feet, leaving the gun station to return to its hidden place under the forward bulkhead.
He extended his hand, and she paused before she slipped her fingers against the metallic warmth of his touch. They walked close together in the narrow confines of the hallway.
“You don’t sleep, do you?”
She blinked at the sudden conversational gambit. “Not much. My body mainly runs on light. My bedroom is mainly more for formalities and a place to watch entertainment programming.”
He chuckled. “That would explain why your bed does not carry much of your scent.”
“I just changed the sheets two days before I picked you up. I slept in it once.” She absorbed what he said. “You mean you are sniffing me every time you lie down?”
“It was awkward to go to sleep while you were faintly surrounding me like that. I kept getting the urge to track you down.”
He escorted her to the kitchen table and set about preparing their meals.
“Why track me down?”
He gave her an implacable look through lowered lashes. “The Centered priesthood is allowed to indulge themselves as they wish.”
She fought the urge to slap him in the face. “I am no one’s indulgence.”
He nodded. “I am aware of that now, but my instincts are my instincts. There is nothing to be done about that.”
“What are your vows regarding the priesthood?”
“To always remain centered and balanced in all situations. Those with my robes frequently act as travelling judges.”
“Oh.”
“We also must remain open to all opportunity. That is why we have a rule against forming permanent attachments. Unfortunately for me, that has ceased to be a rule I can abide by.
